Summer deep-water questions often sound the same: a fish came up from depth, looked bloated, would not swim down, or floated after release. That is not a normal tired-fish problem. It is usually barotrauma.

Barotrauma happens when pressure drops as a fish is brought up from deep water. Gases expand, and the fish may not be able to return to depth on its own. The lazy, useful rule is simple: if a deep-water fish cannot swim down, get it back down with a descending device instead of waiting at the surface.

What barotrauma looks like

Common signs include:

  • A swollen belly.
  • Bulging eyes.
  • The stomach pushed into or out of the mouth.
  • Bubbles under the skin or around the eyes.
  • A fish floating sideways or belly-up after release.
  • A fish that kicks strongly but cannot descend.

The exact depth where this shows up depends on species, water temperature, fight time, and how fast the fish was retrieved. For many reef fish and rockfish anglers, the risk becomes much more noticeable once fish come from about 30 ft (9 m) or deeper. In deeper water, such as 60 ft (18 m), 100 ft (30 m), or more, plan before the first drop.

Why surface revival is not enough

Holding a barotrauma-affected fish beside the boat can look responsible, but it may not solve the problem. If expanded gases keep the fish buoyant, it can be alert and still unable to swim down.

Do this instead:

  1. Keep the fish in the water when practical.
  2. Unhook it quickly.
  3. Attach the descending device.
  4. Send the fish back near capture depth.
  5. Release it once it is deep enough to regain neutral buoyancy.

That sequence matters because predators, heat, low oxygen near the surface, and handling time all stack against the fish.

Descending devices, in plain English

A descending device is a tool that carries a fish back down before release. Most versions work in one of three ways:

  • A lip clamp that opens when you jerk the rod or hit a set depth.
  • An inverted barbless hook that holds the fish until it is pulled free at depth.
  • A weighted crate or basket for fish that should not be clipped by the mouth.

Use enough weight to overcome buoyancy. A small reef fish may go down with 1 lb (0.45 kg) or less, while a larger fish may need 3 lb (1.4 kg), 5 lb (2.3 kg), or more. The right answer is the amount that gets the fish down quickly without a long fight against the device.

If you fish deep water often, rig the device before you need it. A descending setup buried under tackle boxes is not a release plan.

What about venting?

Venting means puncturing the fish with a hollow needle to release expanded gas. It can work when done correctly, but it is easy to do badly. A misplaced puncture can damage organs, increase infection risk, or waste time while the fish is already stressed.

For most recreational anglers, a descending device is the better default. It avoids guessing where to puncture, works fast, and solves the main problem by returning the fish to pressure.

If a regulation, agency guide, or charter captain in your fishery teaches venting for a specific species, follow that local instruction with the correct tool. Do not use knives, hooks, or random tackle as venting tools.

Build a boring deep-water release kit

Keep the kit small:

  • One descending device matched to your fishery.
  • 3 lb (1.4 kg) to 5 lb (2.3 kg) of clip-on weight, or more for large offshore fish.
  • Long pliers or a dehooker.
  • A rubber mesh net or wet measuring board.
  • A line cutter.
  • A phone note with the local regulation or agency release page.

That covers the normal failure point: the fish is at the boat, everyone is talking, and nobody has the tool ready.

When to change tactics

The best release is sometimes not catching that fish again.

Move, change depth, or change rig when:

  • Every undersized fish from the spot shows barotrauma.
  • You are catching closed-season fish that must be released.
  • Predators are waiting under the boat.
  • Water is hot and fish are slow to recover.
  • You cannot return fish to depth quickly.

For example, if undersized fish keep coming from 90 ft (27 m), moving shallower than 30 ft (9 m) may do more good than perfecting the release routine. If you must keep fishing deep, have the descending device clipped on and ready before the next drop.

Freshwater anglers should care too

Barotrauma is not only an ocean problem. Deep summer lakes, reservoirs, and winter fisheries can create the same pressure issue for species pulled from deep water. Walleye, lake trout, crappie, perch, and bass can all struggle after fast depth changes.

Freshwater rules vary, and some waters have slot limits or immediate-release rules. Check the current agency regulation before assuming you can keep a fish that cannot be released cleanly.
