Algae on the water does not always mean the lake is dangerous. It does mean you should slow down before making the first cast.
Summer anglers run into the same problem in ponds, reservoirs, rivers, and coastal bays: the water turns green, brown, red, foamy, streaked, or foul-smelling, and nobody is sure whether it is just ugly water, a tough bite, or a health risk.
The practical answer is: treat suspicious blooms as a safety decision first and a fishing-pattern decision second.
Not every bloom is harmful
Algae and cyanobacteria are normal parts of aquatic systems. They become a problem when conditions let them grow rapidly, become dense, produce toxins, use up oxygen, or release gases that affect people, animals, fish, and shellfish.
The CDC harmful algal bloom guidance says blooms can look like foam, scum, mats, or paint on the water, and that some harmful blooms are hard to see because they can grow below the surface. The same guidance recommends staying out of water that is discolored, scummy, or smelly and checking local swimming, fishing, and shellfish advisories.
The EPA harmful algal bloom overview adds an important angler point: HABs can create risk for human health, pets, aquatic ecosystems, drinking water, commercial fishing, and recreational activities. In other words, this is not only a swimming issue.
If the water has a light green stain but no surface scum, no odor, no dead fish, no advisory, and no illness reports, you may simply be dealing with low visibility and summer fish positioning. If it looks like spilled paint, pea soup, a floating mat, red or brown streaks, or foamy scum, treat it differently.
The no-fish signs
Skip the spot, or at least move well away from the affected water, when you see:
- Posted bloom, beach, fish-consumption, or shellfish-harvest advisories.
- Thick surface scum, paint-like streaks, or mats pushed into coves and downwind banks.
- Strong rotten, chemical, sewage, or musty odor.
- Dead fish, distressed fish, sick birds, or animals avoiding the water.
- Dogs, livestock, or people using the same shoreline where scum is collecting.
- Wind or boat traffic turning bloom water into spray.
The pet warning deserves special attention. CDC notes that animals can become very sick or die within hours after exposure to harmful algae or cyanobacteria. If your dog is with you, bloom water is not a place to "just make a few casts."
Why algae blooms change the bite
Even when you are not dealing with a confirmed toxic bloom, heavy algae can still change fishing.
Blooms reduce visibility. Dense growth can shade plants below the surface. When blooms decay, bacteria use oxygen during decomposition, which can push fish away from the worst water. NOAA's harmful algal bloom explainer notes that some HABs kill fish or cause ecosystem impacts by depleting oxygen in the water.
For anglers, that means the bite often shifts away from the dirtiest, deadest-looking water and toward edges:
- Wind-blown transitions where stained water meets clearer water.
- Inflows with cleaner water, provided they are not carrying runoff or sewage.
- Shaded banks, docks, grass edges, and current seams outside the scum.
- Deeper water, springs, or current where oxygen and temperature are more stable.
- Hard cover beside, not inside, the thickest mats.
Do not assume every fish has left the lake. Assume fish are avoiding the least comfortable water and using the nearest better option.
Freshwater and saltwater blooms are different
Freshwater bloom questions often involve cyanobacteria, commonly called blue-green algae. CDC describes cyanobacteria as the most common cause of harmful blooms in lakes and rivers. Warm, slow-moving, nutrient-rich water makes those blooms more likely, especially after runoff enters the system.
Saltwater and brackish bloom questions often involve dinoflagellates or diatoms. NOAA explains that marine HABs can cause shellfish contamination, respiratory irritation, fish kills, and other wildlife impacts. This is why coastal anglers should separate finfish fishing decisions from shellfish harvesting decisions. A bay may still have fish present while shellfish harvest is closed.
The shared rule is simple: local advisories beat dock talk. Check your state fish and wildlife agency, state health department, beach water-quality page, shellfish closure map, or NOAA forecast where available before keeping fish or launching into suspicious water.
Can you eat fish from bloom water?
Do not use one universal answer for every bloom.
CDC lists eating contaminated fish or shellfish as one possible exposure route. EPA notes that freshwater cyanotoxin exposure can cause symptoms ranging from skin rash to more serious illness, and marine toxins are often a seafood issue. The risk depends on the waterbody, bloom organism, toxin, species, tissue, local testing, and current advisory.
Use this decision order:
- If there is a fish-consumption, shellfish-harvest, beach, or bloom advisory, follow it.
- If fish are dead, distressed, abnormal, or caught from heavy scum, do not keep them.
- If the water looks or smells suspicious and no current advisory is available, release fish and choose a cleaner waterbody.
- If local agencies specifically say finfish harvest is allowed, still avoid eating organs, rinse fillets with clean water, keep bloom water out of the cooler, and wash hands and gear.
That is cautious, but practical. A summer dinner is not worth guessing around an unknown bloom.
How to fish nearby without making a bad decision
If the waterbody has no advisory and the bloom is patchy rather than lake-wide, fish the cleanest available water.
Start upwind of scum lines. Avoid coves where floating material has piled up. Keep your hands, line, landing net, and fish out of the worst water. Do not kneel in bloom residue, lip fish with bloom water dripping over your hands, or let kids and pets play at the edge while you cast.
Tactically, simplify:
- Use darker silhouettes, vibration, or flash when visibility is low.
- Cast to defined edges instead of open, stained water.
- Fish early or late if the water is hot, stagnant, and crowded with surface growth.
- Move quickly if the area smells bad, lacks bait, or shows distressed fish.
- Record where the bloom was thickest, where cleaner water started, wind direction, water color, odor, and whether fish recovered strongly after release.

Fishing near algae is sometimes just a visibility problem. Fishing in a harmful algal bloom is a health, pet, and water-quality problem.
